america-250-design-043
Mount Vernon — George Washington's Home — America 250

Overlooking the Potomac River in Virginia, Mount Vernon was the beloved home of George and Martha Washington. George Washington inherited the estate in 1761 and spent decades enlarging and refining the mansion and grounds. After serving as the nation's first president, he returned to Mount Vernon, where he died in 1799.

One surprising architectural detail: the mansion's exterior looks like stone, but it is actually wood siding finished with sand to imitate stone—a technique known as rustication. Mount Vernon also preserves the stories of the hundreds of enslaved people whose labor sustained the plantation, an essential part of understanding its history.

Part of our America 250 collection, this Liberty Art Note honors an important place in the nation's founding story.
