The beloved story that George Washington asked her to sew the very first Stars and Stripes, however, was passed down through family tradition and is not confirmed by surviving contemporary records.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBetsy lived until 1836, long enough to see the new nation expand far beyond its Revolutionary beginnings.
