Valley Forge — The Winter That Forged a Nation. During the winter of 1777–1778, George Washington and the Continental Army endured bitter cold, shortages, sickness, and uncertainty at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. It was not the site of a great battlefield victory. Instead, it became a turning point in the making of an army—and in the struggle for American independence.
Soldiers built roughly 2,000 log huts for shelter. Prussian officer Baron Friedrich von Steuben introduced disciplined drills that helped turn a struggling force into a more coordinated army. Members of the Oneida Nation also brought much-needed food and support. When Washington's troops departed in June 1778, they were better trained and more capable of standing against British forces.
Valley Forge reminds us that history is not shaped by victories alone. Sometimes the defining moment is the winter people endure together—and the resolve they carry into spring.
