Nikola Tesla — The Mind That Electrified America. A pioneer of alternating-current power systems, Tesla helped make it possible to transmit electricity over long distances. His experiments went far beyond the power grid: he demonstrated wireless lighting and, in Colorado Springs in 1899, investigated high-voltage electricity and wireless transmission.

Beyond the inventions: Tesla never married and had no children, believing that a life devoted to discovery demanded extraordinary focus. He was one of five children; the death of his older brother, Dane, during Tesla's childhood cast a lasting shadow over the family. In later life, Tesla became devoted to feeding pigeons in New York City and spoke especially tenderly of a white pigeon he cared for. Behind the visionary inventor was a complicated, deeply human story of ambition, solitude, and affection.
