Washington — Winter Ride

Washington's winters were not all military hardship. In 1787, his expense ledger recorded a payment of eighteen shillings to a man who brought a camel to Mount Vernon for a show during the Christmas season.

The brief entry is a delightful glimpse of curiosity in an eighteenth-century household. Alongside the familiar stories of battles and leadership, it reveals a man interested in unfamiliar animals and the wider world. This winter-themed tribute leaves room for that human side of Washington, and for the unexpected details that make history memorable.
