Martha Washington — America's First First Lady honors a woman whose leadership, resilience, and hospitality helped shape the earliest years of the American presidency. Although the title “First Lady” came into common use later, Martha Washington is remembered as the nation's first First Lady, serving alongside President George Washington from 1789 to 1797.

Born Martha Dandridge in Virginia in 1731, she became an experienced manager of substantial estates and household affairs. During the Revolutionary War, she joined George Washington at several winter encampments, offering support during difficult years. Her public role helped establish traditions for presidential hospitality and service.

Martha also holds a special place in the history of American currency: her portrait appeared on the back of the celebrated 1896 $1 Educational Series Silver Certificate. The note was issued long after her death in 1802, but remains a treasured example of American banknote artistry.
