Abraham Lincoln — 1861–1865 Tribute
Behind the solemn wartime portrait was a president waiting for news, one telegram at a time. During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln regularly visited the War Department's telegraph office beside the White House to read dispatches from his generals.
The office also offered something unexpected: a quiet place to write. The Smithsonian records that Lincoln began drafting the Emancipation Proclamation there in 1862, using a military telegraph superintendent's desk and brass inkwell. This tribute remembers the patient, private work behind decisions that changed a nation.
Part of our America 250 collection, this Liberty Art Note is collectible artwork printed on authentic U.S. currency, not an official government commemorative issue. A piece to collect, share, and spark conversation.
Each Liberty Note is individually signed by hand. Signature colors and the number of signatures vary by design, adding to the individual character of each piece.
