Lady Liberty — The Light of Freedom. Standing in New York Harbor since her dedication on October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty has welcomed generations with an enduring promise: that freedom is worth striving for and hope can survive even the longest journey. A gift from the people of France, she became a symbol not only of friendship between nations but of possibility for people seeking a new beginning.

Look a little closer: Her seven-pointed crown is often interpreted as a symbol of liberty reaching across the seven continents and seas. The tablet in her arm bears JULY IV MDCCLXXVI—July 4, 1776. At her feet, partly hidden from view, lie broken shackles and chains: a reminder that liberty means leaving oppression behind. Her skin was once the warm brown of copper; the familiar green emerged gradually as a protective patina formed. Sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi is often said to have drawn inspiration for her face from his mother, Charlotte, though that story has never been conclusively established.

She does more than raise a torch. She steps forward. And in that single gesture lives a timeless American hope: that the next generation might walk farther, dream bigger, and live more freely than the one before.

Part of our America 250 collection, this Liberty Art Note is collectible artwork printed on authentic U.S. currency, not an official government commemorative issue. Each note is individually hand-signed; signature colors and counts may vary.

Artist's Finishing Touches: Most uncut sheets receive hand-painted accents at the artist's discretion. The placement, colors, and extent of these enhancements vary, making each finished sheet individually distinctive. Single Art Notes are not hand-painted.
